Leland Carl Oyer, 96, a 65-year resident of Northeast Kansas City, passed away January 19, 2017, at his home. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am, followed by Masonic services at 11:00 am, on Wednesday, January 25, at Park Lawn Northland Chapel, I-35 at State Route 291, Liberty. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Ararat Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund, 5100 Ararat Drive, Kansas City, MO 64129.
Lee was born July 9, 1920, in Barnes, KS, the only child of Carl F. and Amelia (Hagenmaier) Oyer. Along with his parents, Lee was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Decolumbier) Oyer; and son, Carl Leon Oyer.
His career in the aviation industry spanned 45-plus years. He taught aviation in Detroit beginning at age 19, was a civilian aircraft consultant during World War II, and worked for Boeing and TWA for many years. After retirement in 1983, he continued to work as an aircraft consultant until age 90.
Lee was a 32nd degree Mason for over 70 years, joining Kilwinning Lodge #265 in Pratt, KS in 1945. He was also a longtime member of Ararat Shrine Temple where he was a member of the Provost, Trykes and Director's Staff. He also was a dedicated worker for the Shrine Circus and driver for children and their families to the St. Louis Shrine Hospital. Whether they were his own children, grandchildren or children the Shrine serves, he was always devoting time for "the kids".
Survivors include his daughter, LaMoine Marcum (Jack); daughter-in-law, Nancy Oyer; grandchildren, Ginger Dunn, Alex Marcum, Andrea Sacre and Jordan Oyer; great grandchildren, Joey, Amy, Stephen, Isabella, Linka and Randall. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
